Nutrition Ignition - “Fuel for the work required?”
David Bryant, Sports Dietitian, Catalyst Dietitian
“What is the fuel I need for the work required?”...This is the only question you need to ask yourself this year.
Stop asking “should I go low carb” as a blanket solution to your poor choices.
“FUEL FOR THE WORK REQUIRED” ensures you get the best of both worlds.
Performance gains can only be achieved when the performance-orientated session eg: a hard swim interval set, is fueled through the use of CARBOHYDRATES, such as toast, before the early morning session and sipping on sports drink and carbohydrate snacks during the session to maintain the required intensity (let’s face it, most swim squads include hard swims!).
BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE, fat adaptation gains can be achieved when the session is of lower intensity eg: a recovery swim whereby you are RESTRICTING CARBOHYDRATES for fuel, before you swim first thing in the morning.
CUTTING OUT AN ENTIRE FOOD GROUP is simply limiting your performance and body composition goals.
